Brief History of...
Phoenix, Arizona: Nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert
The history of Phoenix, Arizona, spans thousands of years, beginning with nomadic paleo-Indians who traversed the Americas, particularly the Salt River Valley, from around 7,000 BC to 6,000 BC. These hunters primarily sought mammoths as their principal food source.
As the mammoths migrated eastward, the hunters followed, leaving the region unoccupied. Soon after, other nomadic tribes, referred to as archaic Indians, began to settle in, mainly migrating from Mexico to the south and from California to the west. By approximately 1,000 BC, the nomadic way of life started to merge with two developing cultures known as farmers and villagers, a transformation fueled by the integration of maize into their diets. From these archaic tribes, the Hohokam civilization arose.
The Hohokam established themselves in the area around 1 AD and, over the next 500 years, constructed an extensive canal system that enabled agriculture to flourish. Strangely, they disappeared by 1450. When the first Europeans arrived in the region in the early 16th century, the dominant native tribes were the O'odham and Sobaipuri.
